#G20GiveOurKidsBack – Suranya Aiyar on hunger strike

For three days during the G20 Summit in Delhi (8-10 Sept 2023), lawyer and campaigner Suranya Aiyar went on hunger strike as part of international actions to demand an end to children from the Global South being removed from their families and kept from them by social services in Global North countries. She announced: “I will be on hunger strike from tomorrow, September 8th morning, to try and reach the hearts of the G20 Summit delegates who will be in New Delhi this weekend. Please remember me in your thoughts and prayers. I will be at home as public demonstrations of any sort have been banned in the city to welcome the leaders of the Free World. I will try and live stream for the entirety of my fast. I will take liquids with salt and sugar from time to time to keep my health stable. Love and solidarity to CPS victims everywhere. Join our campaign. Tweet, live stream, make videos, write, tell the world your story and use the hashtag #G20GiveOurKidsBack

And to Turkey is here. To the African Union is here.

I am appealing to you to take up this issue as a woman and a mother. My appeal is especially to you because unlike these cold Western countries, I believe that chivalry is not dead in your countries. I believe that unlike these Western countries you respect motherhood. I believe that unlike these Western countries you have not become so spiritually lost and emotionally cold as to have forgotten the magnificence of motherhood and the unparalleled nature of a mother’s love and sacrifice for her children.

‘Australia’s dirty little secret’: Grandmothers urge action on child removals in Canberra

According to the Productivity Commission’s report on government services, there are almost 18,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in out-of-home care across the country – twice the number of children in out-of-home care since the 2008 National Apology.

“We are Australia’s dirty little secret,” says Aunty Hazel Collins.

“The number of our children being stolen by welfare is at an unprecedented high,” Grandmothers Against Removals said in a statement.
